A hyperscale data center is a massive, single-tenant facility built by cloud, internet, or social-media giants to support tens of megawatts of IT load and hundreds of thousands of servers.

A hyperscale data center is a purpose-built facility designed to meet the enormous computing, storage, and networking demands of a single tenant such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, or Meta. These facilities far exceed the size and capacity of traditional enterprise or colocation data centers, with typical power capacities ranging from 20 to over 200 megawatts. The term "hyperscale" originally described the ability of distributed systems to scale efficiently across thousands of servers, but now also applies to the physical infrastructure that underpins those systems.

Hyperscale data centers rely on standardized, modular hardware and a software-defined operational model. Compute, storage, and networking are disaggregated and interconnected via high-speed Clos or spine-leaf fabrics. Automation and orchestration layers handle server provisioning, load balancing, and fault remediation without human intervention. Redundancy is built at the system level (N+1 or 2N for power and cooling) rather than requiring fault-tolerant individual components. Coolant distribution methods include air-side economization and direct-to-chip liquid cooling for high-density racks.

In the broader data center stack, hyperscale facilities sit at the peak of scale and efficiency. They operate on a custom-designed electrical and mechanical architecture that prioritizes an optimal power usage effectiveness (PUE) target, often near 1.1. Their vertical integration eliminates multi-tenant overhead but demands massive capital expenditure and a long planning horizon of three to five years. Internet infrastructure, from CDNs to AI training clusters, is increasingly concentrated inside these facilities, making them the physical backbone of the global cloud.
