Hosting type
VPS hosting
A VPS, or virtual private server, carves a physical machine into isolated slices, each with guaranteed CPU, memory and storage. You get root access and resources that are yours, without paying for a whole dedicated box.
A VPS is the natural step up when shared hosting starts to throttle you. The big decision is managed versus unmanaged: managed means the host patches and maintains the server, unmanaged means you do, in exchange for a lower price and full control. Match the RAM and CPU to your workload rather than the marketing tier names, which vary wildly between hosts.
Best for
- •Sites that have outgrown shared hosting
- •Developers who need root access and custom stacks
- •Staging, app and API servers
- •Stores and apps with steady, predictable load
What to check before you buy
- •Managed or unmanaged, and what managed actually covers
- •Dedicated vs burstable CPU
- •NVMe vs SSD storage and the IOPS
- •Bandwidth allowance and overage pricing
- •Snapshots, backups and how fast you can scale up

Common questions
A virtual private server gives you a guaranteed slice of a physical machine, with your own CPU, RAM, storage and root access, isolated from other customers. It sits between shared hosting and a dedicated server.
On a managed VPS the host handles operating-system updates, security patches and often the control panel. On an unmanaged VPS you do all of that yourself, which is cheaper but assumes you are comfortable administering a server.
It depends on the workload. A small site or API is fine on 1 to 2 GB; a busy WordPress or WooCommerce site is happier with 4 GB or more. Use the filters to compare plans by RAM and CPU rather than tier names.
