A Carrier Hotel is a physical facility where multiple telecommunications carriers co-locate equipment and tenants can cross-connect directly to any carrier's network without using a third-party provider.

A Carrier Hotel, also called a carrier-neutral facility or meet-me room, is a purpose-built data center or telecommunications building that houses the network equipment of multiple competing carriers, ISPs, and cloud providers under one roof. The defining feature is that no single carrier owns or controls the building; any licensed carrier can lease space and bring in its fiber optic cables. Tenants, which can range from enterprise companies to content delivery networks, can then purchase cross-connects to whatever carrier they need, allowing them to bypass last-mile access fees and reach multiple networks through a single physical location.

Inside a Carrier Hotel, the core infrastructure is the Meet-Me Room (MMR), a locked-down cage or dedicated floor where carriers terminate their fiber and copper. From the MMR, cross-connect cables run to tenant cages or cabinets on other floors. Cross-connects are provisioned on demand, often ordered through a web portal, and can be patched in hours. The physical layer is strictly controlled: all cabling follows structured standards, and facilities maintain strict power, cooling, and physical security. Carrier Hotels are typically located in dense urban areas near major fiber routes, making them critical interconnection hubs for internet traffic exchange.

In the wider internet infrastructure stack, Carrier Hotels serve as the physical foundation for peering and transit. They are distinct from ordinary colocation data centers because they intentionally host many carriers and provide an open, neutral interconnection market. Large Carrier Hotels like Equinix IBX or 60 Hudson Street in New York handle thousands of cross-connects and route traffic for a significant fraction of the entire internet. They enable low-latency, cost-effective traffic exchange and are the primary locations where ISPs, cloud providers, and content companies meet to pass traffic.
