The five things to know

1. 1.The hosting industry is older than most people think. 566 of today's active providers were founded in the 1990s. The 2000s were the boom — 1,533 providers trace their founding to that decade.
2. 2.The United States dominates everything. 1,138 providers, 1,349 data centers (26% of the world's total), 210 internet exchanges. But Europe collectively hosts more providers than any single country.
3. 3.Indonesia and Brazil punch wildly above their weight in the peering layer. IX.br São Paulo is the world's largest internet exchange by membership (1,856 networks). Three of the world's ten densest peering corridors involve Jakarta.
4. 4.Two operators own a sixth of the physical internet. Equinix runs 206 data centers, Digital Realty 126. Combined, that is 6.4% of every facility in our database, and the long tail does not catch them.
5. 5.Shared hosting is still the front door with 3,405 providers offering it, but the price gap matters: shared averages $10.41/mo while managed averages $20.06/mo. The premium is real and people are paying it.

The shape of the market

The HostDir directory tracks 4,191 active hosting providers across 170 countries. The geographic concentration is as expected at the top, with the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany running the table. Less expected: Singapore, India and Canada all crack the top six, well ahead of France and Spain.

Categories and prices

Shared hosting remains the largest single category (3,405 providers), followed by domain registration and VPS. The interesting story is in the spread: shared averages $10.41/mo, cloud sits around $17.49, managed hosting nearly doubles to $20.06. The $0.01/mo loss leaders so many ranking sites quote are excluded — these are realistic averages of the entry plans real customers actually start on.

The age of the industry

Most"best hosting" listicles read like the industry was invented last Tuesday. It wasn't. The oldest provider in the directory, IONOS, was founded in 1988. The 1990s produced 566 providers still operating today. The 2000s were the inflection point. The 2010s have given us fewer absolute names but bigger ones — Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr.

The physical fabric

5,158 active data centers sit under the world's web hosting industry. The United States runs 1,349 of them, about a quarter of the global total. The genuine surprise is the runner-up tier: Brazil's 302 facilities sit ahead of the United Kingdom, France and Canada. The physical internet's center of gravity is not where most coverage assumes it is.

Two operators dominate the consolidated end. Equinix runs 206 facilities. Digital Realty runs 126. Together they account for 6.4% of every active facility in the database, and the gap to the third operator is significant.

The exchange layer

1,310 internet exchange points link the world's networks together. The largest one is not where most of the industry expects.

IX.br São Paulo connects 1,856 member networks — more than DE-CIX Frankfurt (1,014), AMS-IX (853) or LINX London (837). Brazil's neutral national peering fabric, run by NIC.br, is genuinely the largest internet exchange in the world by membership, and has been for several years now. The European trio still handles more aggregate traffic, but membership-wise the world's centre of peering gravity is in São Paulo and Jakarta.

Top peering corridors

For every pair of exchanges we counted the networks that are members of both, derived from PeeringDB's full netixlan table. That count is a defensible proxy for how much real peering happens between any two exchanges.

All 1,803 measured corridors are visible on the live infrastructure map.

The network layer

28,047 autonomous systems are registered with PeeringDB worldwide. The single biggest class is cable / DSL ISPs with 12,246 networks — the operators most internet users actually pay for. After that come Network Service Providers (transit) and content networks. The cable/ISP layer is the heaviest by count but content networks have the disproportionate traffic share.

Domain extensions

The IANA root zone publishes 1,583 domain extensions. The vast majority — 1,240 — are generic TLDs introduced in waves: the original .com/.net/.org from the eighties, the dot-com era infrastructure TLDs, and the much larger 2012 ICANN expansion that added more than a thousand specialised extensions. The 314 country-code TLDs are the more permanent layer; they will outlive most of the newer gTLDs.

   Brazil has more data centers than the UK or France

   302 facilities to the UK's 208 and France's 201. Most western coverage of the hosting industry undercounts Latin American infrastructure by an order of magnitude.

   Jakarta dominates the densest corridors

   Three of the ten densest peering corridors in the world are between Jakarta exchanges: IIX-Jakarta, JKT-IX and OpenIXP. Indonesia is a quietly enormous peering market.

   Industry standard

   24/7 support is now the floor

   2,820 providers explicitly market 24/7 customer support. Business-hours-only providers are now a clearly marked minority, useful for buyers as a quick signal.

   Pricing reality

   The"from $0.01/mo" lies are universal

   The honest shared-hosting average is $10.41/mo. The"$0.01" introductory rates that dominate ad copy do not survive a basic outlier filter.
