What is Data Center Tier Classification?

The Uptime Institute's Data Center Tier Classification is a standard methodology for rating data center infrastructure based on redundancy, capacity, and availability, ranging from Tier I (basic) to Tier IV (fault-tolerant).
Data Center Tier Classification, established by the Uptime Institute, defines four levels of data center infrastructure design and operational performance. The tiers categorize facilities by their ability to maintain uptime during planned and unplanned events.
A Tier I data center has basic capacity with no redundancy; it is susceptible to disruptions from any planned or unplanned activity. Expected availability is 99.671%. Tier II adds redundant capacity components (N+1) for power and cooling, achieving 99.741% availability. Tier III introduces concurrently maintainable infrastructure; any component can be serviced without disrupting operations, targeting 99.982% availability. Tier IV provides fault-tolerant infrastructure with multiple independent physical paths and 2N redundancy, achieving 99.995% availability.
This classification is widely used in the data center industry for design, benchmarking, and operational planning. It helps organizations match infrastructure investment to business-criticality. The tiers are not a prescriptive standard but a framework that informs redundancy strategies and maintenance practices.
