The Agent Stack Emerges: Vercel, AWS, and NVIDIA Build Infrastructure for Autonomous AI Workflows

Vercel released its Agent Stack on June 17, 2026, providing developers with a unified set of tools for building production-grade AI agents that connect to multiple models, execute complex workflows, and interact with external systems.

Vercel released its Agent Stack on June 17, 2026, offering developers a unified set of building blocks for creating production-grade AI agents. The stack is designed to solve the three core problems every agent faces: connecting to and routing between models, executing durable multi-step workflows, and integrating with external systems and user interfaces.

The announcement comes on the same day AWS introduced autonomous agents in Amazon Quick that work continuously on behalf of users, and NVIDIA revealed it is using teams of AI coding agents to autonomously direct robot training. The simultaneous moves signal a broader industry push to move AI agents from experimental demos into reliable, autonomous production systems.

Vercel's Three Layer Architecture

Vercel's Agent Stack is built on three products already in the company's portfolio. The AI SDK provides a single, model-agnostic interface for calling any large language model, image generator, or speech model. Developers switch models by changing one string, not rewriting code. The AI Gateway acts as a content delivery network for tokens, routing calls from a single endpoint, failing over when a provider goes down, and tracking cost and usage across all providers. Vercel says it charges no markup on model pricing; users pay the provider's price and use their own API keys.

  • Vercel Sandbox gives each agent its own isolated microVM with a full Linux filesystem and Docker support, so agents can safely read files, run commands, and write code without risk of contaminating other workloads.
  • Workflow SDK checkpoints every step of an agent's execution, persisting state and enabling resumption from the last successful step if a failure occurs. This avoids re-running expensive model calls from scratch.
  • The stack is platform, framework, and model agnostic, allowing developers to deploy agents on any infrastructure.

Industry Wide Moves Toward Autonomy

AWS's new autonomous agents in Amazon Quick operate continuously on behalf of users, surfacing insights across any connected data source from a single natural language query. An activity feed helps users prioritize the most important work surfaced by the agents. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is using teams of AI coding agents that autonomously direct robot training, a self-improvement cycle that could accelerate robotics development significantly, as reported by Ars Technica on June 17, 2026.

Observers note that the shift to production grade agents requires solving durability, security, and cost tracking challenges that were often ignored in early prototypes. Vercel's Greg Chan, CTO of customer SERHANT, is quoted in the blog post saying, "The last thing we want is to rebuild our infrastructure every time a new model drops." The stack aims to abstract exactly that complexity. The New Stack also reported that AWS today launched Context, a knowledge graph service described as "a data lake of nuance for AI agents to swim in," aimed at improving agent reasoning accuracy.
