Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis Steps Down in Major AI Leadership Shakeup
Google announced a sweeping AI leadership overhaul on Wednesday, with Demis Hassabis leaving his DeepMind CEO role to become chair and Alphabet chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over as SVP of DeepMind, while veteran Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat exit to form a new AI research company.
Google on Wednesday announced a sweeping overhaul of its AI leadership, with DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis stepping down as CEO to become chairman of the unit and Alphabet's chief scientist. The changes, communicated by CEO Sundar Pichai, take effect immediately.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly DeepMind's CTO and chief AI architect, will become senior vice president of DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is leaving the company alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to form a new AI-focused public benefit corporation called Discovery Loop.
Key leadership changes
- Demis Hassabis becomes chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet chief scientist, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs, an AI drug discovery venture.
- Koray Kavukcuoglu assumes the role of SVP of DeepMind, inheriting most of Hassabis's operational responsibilities.
- Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat depart to found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation building AI solutions for machine learning, science, and engineering. Google will be a "founding investor" in the new company.
- Hassabis will advise Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leads while working closely with Pichai on strategic AGI matters.
Implications for Google's AI strategy
The departures remove two of the most prominent figures in Google's AI history at a time when competition from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic is intensifying. Hassabis's move to a more strategic role suggests Alphabet is prioritizing long-term health and AGI research, while Kavukcuoglu's promotion signals a focus on engineering execution. The loss of Dean, who shaped Google's AI infrastructure for over two decades, raises questions about institutional knowledge transfer.
Discovery Loop's mission statement says it aims to "build AI systems that act as a deeply positive, empowering force for humanity," similar to the language used by DeepMind. Google's investment in the new venture indicates an ongoing relationship, but the separation of top talent could slow internal research momentum.
Pichai stated that Hassabis will "continue to work closely" with him on strategic matters, and that Kavukcuoglu will lead DeepMind's day-to-day operations. The company has not disclosed a timeline for filling the chief scientist role vacated by Dean.
