Google on Wednesday announced a sweeping overhaul of its AI leadership, with DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis stepping down as CEO to become chairman of the unit and Alphabet's chief scientist. The changes, communicated by CEO Sundar Pichai, take effect immediately.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly DeepMind's CTO and chief AI architect, will become senior vice president of DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is leaving the company alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to form a new AI-focused public benefit corporation called Discovery Loop.
