Shipbuilder pays $89,000 for Balaena.com as end user domain sales surge; UDRP on Sankaku.net denied over dictionary term

Sedo's latest public sales list shows a shipbuilder paying $89,000 for Balaena.com. Meanwhile, a UDRP case for Sankaku.net was denied because the domain is a Japanese dictionary word for triangle.

Sedo published a list of 20 end user domain name sales on June 17, 2026, topped by Balaena.com at $89,000. The buyer was Balaena, a British shipbuilding and repair company. In a separate development, a UDRP complaint against Sankaku.net was denied because the domain is a generic Japanese word meaning triangle.

Balaena.com was the highest public sale Sedo recorded in the period covered. The domain refers to a genus of whale, but the buyer is a maritime company, making the name a natural fit for a business in ship construction and repair. Other sales included Chance.de at EUR 21,800 for a consumer electronics retailer, Farfield.com at $15,000 acquired by a CTO, and Travely.com at $13,000 for a tour booking site that uses a matching .app domain.

End user domain sales by sector: AI, solar, and cybersecurity

The list reveals diverse buyers across industries. MyCar.ai sold for $10,000 to a startup planning an AI-powered car search tool that recommends vehicles based on budget and lifestyle. Actec.eu fetched EUR 11,900 for a solar power and air conditioning company, while ASP-group.com went for $5,670 to a firm that helps businesses adopt AI solutions. Clever naming also appeared: IGotHacked.com sold for $4,755 to a cybersecurity incident response company.

  • RiversideHealth.com: $6,895 for a Virginia medical provider.
  • FinanzKompass.de: EUR 6,490 for a German lead generation firm.
  • Muvv.com: $5,000 for a company making extendable table frames.
  • Speakeasy.de and Speakeasy.at: EUR 8,800 combined for a German language school.
  • ExpressLoans.com: $2,500 for a loan lead generator.

UDRP denial highlights dictionary term defense

In a UDRP ruling published recently, a panel denied the complaint filed by Complex Contents Ltd. against the registrant of Sankaku.net. Complex Contents operates a visual media platform under the SANKAKU brand and holds a U.S. trademark registered in 2025. It claimed use of the mark since 2008. The respondent, Jun Hiyama of Japan, argued that sankaku is the Japanese word for triangle and is a common dictionary term. The panel agreed, finding no evidence of bad faith registration or use. The domain remains with the respondent.

The decision reinforces the principle that generic dictionary words in any language cannot be commandeered through UDRP absent proof of targeting. The complainant relied on a single U.S. trademark and failed to show that the domain was registered primarily to exploit the mark.

What comes next for domain investors and brand owners

The Balaena.com sale signals strong demand for descriptive and industry aligned domains among deep pocketed end users, even at five figure prices. The Sankaku.net ruling reminds brand owners that securing a trademark does not automatically confer rights to common words in foreign languages. Buyers and sellers should consider both commercial value and legal risk when negotiating domain transactions involving dictionary terms. Sedo continues to be a primary venue for these trades, with the full list of sales published weekly.
