The registry offers a variety of second-level domains under .pt, including .com.pt and .org.pt, each with its own rules. The domain was first registered in 1988, making it one of the older ccTLDs. In 2013, the management was redelegated to Associação DNS.PT, which continues to oversee its operations today.
