The .tr domain was originally delegated in 1990. For many years it was managed by the Middle East Technical University. In April 2019, IANA approved the transfer of the .tr domain to Bilgi Teknolojileri ve İletişim Kurumu (BTK), the national regulatory authority for information and communication technologies in Turkey. This transfer centralized administration under a government body.
