Google began rolling out Android 17 to Pixel phones on June 16, 2026, alongside Wear OS 7 for Pixel Watch models. The same day, preorders opened for the Xreal Aura, the second Android XR device, signaling a coordinated push across phones, wearables, and smart glasses.

Android 17 introduces floating Bubble app windows accessible by a long press, a dedicated bubble bar dock for foldables and tablets, a Screen Reaction recording mode, and a 50/50 split gaming mode. Wear OS 7 adds Live Updates that sync sports scores and delivery tracking between watch and phone. Google claims a 10 percent battery life improvement over Wear OS 6.

Foldables get native gamepad controls and continuity

Android 17 adds virtual gamepad controls for foldable phones, letting users place on-screen buttons on the bottom half of the display while the game runs above. Pixel foldables get the feature first, with native controller remapping arriving in the coming months. Another new feature, called Continue On, lets users start a task on a phone and resume it on a compatible tablet, similar to Apple's Handoff.

  • Bubbles: floating app windows with a persistent dock for multitasking on large screens.
  • Screen Reaction: records the screen with camera overlay for game or app captures.
  • 50/50 gaming mode: splits the foldable display evenly for controls and content.
  • Continue On: cross-device task handoff between phone and tablet.
  • Gemini Intelligence: additional AI features slated for later in 2026.

Wear OS 7 and XR glasses create a multi-device ecosystem

Wear OS 7 rolls out today for the Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4. Beyond Live Updates and battery gains, the update prepares the platform for connectivity with Android XR devices. The Xreal Aura glasses, a collaboration between Xreal and Google, are available for preorder at a 99 dollar reservation fee with a full launch expected this fall in the US, UK, Japan, Canada, and South Korea. Early preorders include 199 dollars in credit toward the final purchase, which has not yet been priced. The Aura follows the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, which launched at 1,799 dollars in October 2025. Best Buy will be the first in-store retail partner for the Aura.

Google has not confirmed when non-Pixel manufacturers will ship Android 17, but has stated that the update will roll out to other devices throughout 2026. Some Android 17 features, including Gemini Intelligence, will arrive later in the year. With three platform updates landing in one day, Google is betting that tighter integration across phone, watch, and glasses will encourage users to stay inside its hardware ecosystem.
