Google Images turns 25 with a personalized, AI-powered homepage redesign

Google Images marks its 25th anniversary with a redesign that replaces the blank search bar with a browsable gallery of images curated from your search history. The update also brings AI image generation into AI Overviews.

Google Images is celebrating its 25th anniversary this week with a redesign that turns its once-minimalist homepage into a dynamic, personalized gallery. The new interface, rolling out over the coming weeks, will show users a feed of images before they type a single query, curated from their web and search history.

The image search engine launched in July 2001, inspired by the green Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards. Google engineers realized people searching for the dress wanted to see it, not read about it. Twenty-five years later, the service processes billions of queries per month.

From blank search bar to Pinterest-like feed

The new Google Images homepage replaces the familiar search bar with a continuously updating gallery of images. Google says the feed will be "intelligently tailored to your unique interests," meaning it draws on your search history and web activity to surface relevant visuals. The company is also resurfacing Collections, a feature that lets users save images into themed groups, now accessible from a menu at the top of the gallery.

  • The redesign is described by multiple outlets as Pinterest-like, emphasizing browsing over searching.
  • Users can still search for specific images using the search bar, which remains available.
  • The personalized gallery will update continuously based on user activity.
  • Collections will be more prominent, allowing easy access to saved images.

AI image generation comes to search results

Alongside the homepage overhaul, Google is expanding its AI image generation capabilities. The company's Nano Banana image model, previously available in Gemini and AI Mode, is now being integrated into AI Overviews. When a user's query suggests a need for a visual, Google's AI will generate an image and place it directly in the AI Overview section of the search results page. This pushes organic results further down the page.

The move signals Google's continued push to embed generative AI into core search experiences. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the personalized gallery, which relies on tracking user behavior to populate the feed. Google has not announced an opt-out mechanism for the personalized recommendations beyond standard search history controls.

Both the redesigned Google Images homepage and the AI image generation in AI Overviews will roll out over the coming weeks. Initially, the features will be available only to accounts set to English. Google has not provided a timeline for broader language support.
