AWS launches $1B forward-deployed engineer organization for enterprise AI
AWS is investing $1 billion in a new forward-deployed engineering organization focused on AI. Engineers will embed with enterprise customers to deploy purpose-built agents, aiming for fast deployments and customer self-sufficiency.
Amazon Web Services announced on June 30, 2026, a $1 billion investment in a new internal organization for forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) focused on artificial intelligence. The move follows similar initiatives by OpenAI and Anthropic, as cloud providers race to help enterprises integrate AI into production systems.
The $1 billion in resources will fund a dedicated team of engineers who embed directly with enterprise customers to build and deploy custom AI agents. The organization aims to reduce deployment timelines from months to weeks, according to the company.
How the FDE model works
Forward-deployed engineers work on-site with customer engineering teams to solve specific problems using the provider's platform. In AWS's case, the focus is on agentic AI systems that can automate complex workflows. The engineers are responsible for both initial deployment and training customer teams to maintain and extend the systems independently.
- Engineers embed with customers for periods ranging from weeks to several months.
- The team will prioritize purpose-built agents for industries such as healthcare, finance, and logistics.
- AWS plans to hire hundreds of engineers for the new organization, with roles in Seattle, New York, and London.
- The initiative builds on AWS's existing Professional Services and Solution Architecture teams.
- Customers will have access to AWS's Bedrock and SageMaker platforms for agent development.
Why AWS is investing now
Enterprise adoption of generative AI has been slower than many cloud providers anticipated. A 2025 survey by Gartner found that only 12% of enterprises had deployed AI agents in production, citing integration complexity and lack of internal expertise as primary barriers. AWS's FDE organization directly addresses those bottlenecks by providing hands-on engineering support.
The investment also signals intensifying competition among cloud providers. Microsoft Azure has expanded its own AI deployment teams, and Google Cloud recently launched a similar FDE program for its Vertex AI platform. AWS's $1 billion commitment is the largest single investment in this model to date. The company expects the new organization to be fully operational by the end of 2026, with initial customer engagements beginning in the third quarter.
