Aston Power, a Raleigh, North Carolina based startup, has raised $20 million in a funding round led by TDK Ventures and JLL Spark Global Ventures to expand its private power delivery platform for data centers and large industrial projects. The company, founded in 2022, aims to bypass traditional utility interconnection queues that can take five to ten years.

Aston Power claims its integrated platform can deliver utility-grade power in two to three years by combining on-site generation, storage, and private transmission infrastructure into a single managed service. Its current pipeline includes approximately 2GW of power capacity tied to active projects in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

How the Private Power Platform Works

The company's platform creates a private power network for data centers and other industrial offtakers. It orchestrates the full stack in real time using a software platform, combining generation, transmission, firming, and delivery infrastructure. Aston Power has not yet formally signed an agreement with a data center developer, but it reports strong demand from developers and infrastructure investors.

  • The platform is designed to deliver utility-grade power in two to three years, compared to five to ten years for grid connections.
  • It combines on-site generation, storage, and private transmission into a single managed service.
  • The company's pipeline includes approximately 2GW of capacity in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
  • Funding will be used to grow physical operations, expand across North America, and accelerate deployment.
  • Aston Power was founded in 2022 and is based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Regulatory and Operational Context

The funding comes as the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has ordered grid operators to justify or reform how data centers connect to the grid, applying to all of the country's Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs). This regulatory pressure, combined with rising power demand from AI infrastructure, is driving interest in alternative power delivery models. Separately, theft of batteries from cell towers in South Africa and new data center construction in Finland highlight the global nature of infrastructure challenges.

Aston Power CEO Greg Robinson said in a statement that AI is changing infrastructure requirements faster than the traditional power industry can keep up. The company plans to use the new capital to scale its operations and expand its geographic footprint, targeting more projects in North America. The startup's approach could offer a faster path to power for data center developers facing long interconnection queues and grid constraints.
