Anthropic signs letters of intent for over 1GW of data center capacity

Anthropic has signed more than a dozen letters of intent with US data center developers for over 1GW of IT capacity, seeking to reduce reliance on cloud providers and control its own servers.

Anthropic has signed more than a dozen letters of intent with multiple US data center developers for a total of over 1GW of IT capacity, according to a report from The Information. The AI lab is pursuing direct control of its own servers and infrastructure to reduce long-term compute costs.

The non-binding LOIs cover a combined 1,000 megawatts of IT load, sources told the publication. Anthropic has not disclosed which developers or locations are involved. The letters allow the company to conduct due diligence on providers and their sites before committing to firm leases.

Google financial backing and Fluidstack ties

Anthropic is also seeking an arrangement with Google under which the cloud giant would provide a financial guarantee for its lease payments, similar to the guarantee Google has with AI cloud provider Fluidstack. Anthropic already works with Fluidstack as part of the Broadcom, Apollo, and Blackstone 20GW XPU platform. The first gigawatt of that platform will deploy in Fluidstack data centers starting in mid-2026.

  • Anthropic has committed to renting more than 10GW of servers from cloud providers to date, including a $200 billion agreement with Google.
  • The company has signed large cloud deals with Akamai, AWS (including a massive cluster of Trainium hardware), CoreWeave, and a $50 billion partnership with Fluidstack.
  • In late May 2026, Anthropic raised $65 billion in Series H funding and confidentially filed for an IPO with the SEC.

From cloud tenant to infrastructure owner

The shift toward direct data center control marks a strategic change for Anthropic, which has historically relied on cloud providers for compute capacity. The AI lab already leases the entire Colossus 1 data center from SpaceX/xAI in a deal worth $1.25 billion per month, and will also lease space at the Colossus II facility. Anthropic has been on a data center staff hiring spree, signaling its intent to operate infrastructure in-house.

What comes next depends on whether the LOIs convert into firm leases and how quickly Anthropic can build operational capability. The company's IPO filing suggests it needs to demonstrate infrastructure self-sufficiency to investors. With over 1GW in LOIs and deep cloud commitments, Anthropic is positioning to control its own compute destiny while still leaning on hyperscaler partners for peak demand.
