RFC 2817, “Upgrading to TLS Within HTTP/1.1”, is a Proposed Standard document published in May 2000 by R. Khare, S. Lawrence. It updates RFC 2616. It has since been updated by RFC 7230, RFC 7231. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
This memo explains how to use the Upgrade mechanism in HTTP/1.1 to initiate Transport Layer Security (TLS) over an existing TCP connection. [STANDARDS-TRACK]
