What is VPS?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtualized instance on a physical server that provides dedicated CPU, RAM, and storage, offering isolation and performance similar to a dedicated server at a lower cost.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtual machine sold as a service by an Internet hosting provider. It runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have superuser-level access to that OS instance. The virtualization technology, typically a hypervisor such as KVM, Xen, or VMware, partitions the physical server into multiple isolated environments, each with guaranteed resource allocations. This gives the user the experience of a dedicated server without the expense of owning the hardware.

The hypervisor abstracts the underlying hardware and allocates a fixed portion of CPU cores, memory, and disk space to each VPS. These allocations are dedicated, meaning one VPS's activity does not affect the performance of another, unlike shared hosting where resources are contested. The VPS can be rebooted independently, and providers often include features like snapshots, backups, and the ability to reinstall the operating system. Resource limits are enforced by the hypervisor, so a VPS with 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of RAM will always have that amount available, even if neighboring VPSes are under heavy load.

VPS hosting occupies a middle ground between shared hosting and dedicated servers. It is commonly used for websites with moderate traffic, application hosting, development and staging environments, and as a stepping stone to cloud infrastructure. Compared to shared hosting, a VPS offers more control, security, and performance predictability. Compared to a dedicated server, it is more affordable and easier to scale, as resources can often be upgraded without migrating physical hardware. Many cloud providers also offer VPS-like instances under different names, but the core concept remains the same: a virtualized slice of a server with dedicated resources.
