Bare-metal cloud is a hosting model in which a provider offers dedicated physical servers that can be provisioned, managed, and decommissioned through an API or web interface, similar to virtual machines in a public cloud. Unlike virtualized environments, there is no hypervisor layer between the operating system and the hardware. The OS runs directly on the server, which eliminates the performance overhead and resource contention caused by virtualization.

When a user requests a server through the API, the provider automatically configures the hardware, installs the operating system, and makes the machine available within minutes. The user gains full control over the kernel, drivers, and firmware settings, and can install custom hypervisors or container runtimes on top of the bare metal.

Bare-metal cloud sits between traditional colocation and virtualized public cloud. It offers the isolation and raw performance of dedicated hardware with the agility and self-service of cloud infrastructure.
