About .org

.org is a generic top-level domain originally intended for non commercial organizations, though it has no restrictions and is open to anyone. It is operated by the Public Interest Registry (PIR), a nonprofit based in Reston, Virginia. PIR took over management from Verisign in 2003. The domain was one of the original TLDs created in 1985, making it one of the oldest on the internet. Today, .org is widely used by charities, open source projects, community groups, and individuals. There are no eligibility requirements, so anyone can register a .org name through any ICANN accredited registrar. The registry uses a thick WHOIS model and supports RDAP for modern domain lookups. PIR also runs the .ngo and .ong TLDs.
