About .htc
The .htc domain extension was created for HTC Corporation, the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer. It is a generic top-level domain originally intended for brand-related use. The registry was operated by HTC, with no sponsoring organization assigned from the traditional oversight bodies. The domain was delegated in March 2016 but never made it into the root zone. By October 2017, less than two years after its initial approval, the .htc domain was revoked. People looking for an address ending in .htc will not find any live websites because the domain was removed before ever going live. The whole experiment shows how some branded TLDs struggle with implementation and long term viability.
History
Short lived and mostly off the record. .htc was delegated to HTC on March 3, 2016, as part of the new gTLD program. HTC Corporation was the sole intended user. The domain was never added to the root zone. IANA revoked the delegation on October 9, 2017, and last updated the record on October 24, 2017. No public registry ever operated.
Eligibility & restrictions
No restrictions available since the domain was never active.
