TSMC Pledges Additional $100 Billion for Arizona Fabs, Total U.S. Investment Hits $265 Billion
TSMC will invest another $100 billion in Arizona, bringing its total U.S. commitment to $265 billion. The plan includes four new fabs for 2nm and below chips, but analysts question the timeline.
TSMC said on Thursday it will invest an additional $100 billion in Arizona, bringing its total U.S. commitment to $265 billion. The announcement came during the company's second-quarter earnings call, where it reported a record 77.4% year-over-year profit jump.
The expansion includes four new fabrication plants focused on 2-nanometer and below process technology, plus advanced packaging facilities. TSMC said the investment is needed to support strong multiyear demand from leading U.S. customers, including Nvidia and Apple.
Scale of the Arizona Buildout
TSMC had already committed $165 billion to six fabs in Arizona. The new $100 billion pledge adds four more fabs, bringing the total to ten. The company also raised its 2026 capital expenditure budget to between $60 billion and $64 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $52 billion to $56 billion.
- Total U.S. investment: $265 billion
- Planned fabs in Arizona: 10 (6 previously announced, 4 new)
- Technology nodes: 2nm and below, plus advanced packaging
- Key customers: Nvidia, Apple, and other AI and data center chip buyers
- 2026 capex: $60 billion to $64 billion
Implications for U.S. Chip Independence
The investment is a major step in the U.S. push to onshore advanced semiconductor manufacturing. TSMC's Arizona campus is already producing chips, and the new fabs are expected to come online in the late 2020s and early 2030s. However, The Register noted that the pledge is "the outline of a concept of a plan," pointing to past delays and cost overruns at the site. TSMC has previously struggled with labor shortages and construction challenges in Arizona.
What comes next depends on execution. TSMC said it will break ground on the new fabs in 2027, with volume production targeted for 2030. The company also plans to hire thousands of engineers and construction workers. For now, the announcement signals that TSMC sees the U.S. as a long-term manufacturing hub, even as it continues to expand in Taiwan and Japan.
