Microsoft today unveiled its new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models, both upgrading to Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 processors. The devices are available starting today, with the Surface Pro starting at $1,499 and the Surface Laptop at $1,599.

The new Surface Pro (11th generation) and Surface Laptop (8th generation) arrive roughly two years after the Snapdragon X1-powered Copilot Plus PCs launched in 2024. Microsoft says the Snapdragon X2 delivers a 53% improvement in graphics performance on the Surface Pro, while the Surface Laptop offers up to 20 hours of battery life on the 13.8-inch model.

Price Hikes and Design Changes

The starting prices represent a significant increase over the previous generation. According to Engadget, the new Surface Pro costs $500 more than its predecessor, and the Surface Laptop costs $600 more. Both machines are available in Platinum, Black, and Dune colors, with the Surface Laptop adding a new Jade green option. The shells are made from 100% recycled aluminum.

  • Surface Pro starts at $1,499 with Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16GB RAM, no keyboard or stylus included.
  • Surface Laptop starts at $1,599 with Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16GB RAM, available in 13.8-inch and 15-inch LCD displays.
  • Surface Pro battery life rated up to 15.5 hours; Surface Laptop up to 20 hours on the smaller model.
  • Surface Laptop features a new haptic trackpad with subtle feedback, demonstrated in pre-loaded Affinity apps.
  • Microsoft introduced a new Surface Repair Tool that runs diagnostics and guides users through repairs for battery, display, camera, and motherboard.

Implications for Windows on Arm

The Snapdragon X2 launch continues Microsoft's push for Windows on Arm, which began with the Copilot Plus PC initiative in 2024. The new chips are expected to close the performance gap with Apple's M-series processors, though the higher prices may limit adoption among consumers. Microsoft is also facing competition from other Arm-based Windows devices, such as Samsung's Galaxy Book 6 Edge with Snapdragon X2 Elite, priced at $2,100.

Looking ahead, the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro are available for order today. Microsoft has not announced any Intel-based versions of these models, suggesting the company is doubling down on Arm architecture for its flagship devices. The new Surface Repair Tool could also reduce e-waste by making repairs more accessible to users.
