Meta makes camera privacy light tampering result in automatic camera disable
Meta is rolling out a mandatory update that disables the camera on its smart glasses if the privacy LED light is tampered with or destroyed, following reports of modders bypassing the indicator.
Meta is rolling out a mandatory update for its Ray-Ban and Meta-branded smart glasses that disables the camera if the device detects the privacy LED light has been physically tampered with or destroyed. The update, announced July 7, 2026, aims to counter increasingly sophisticated attempts to bypass the recording indicator.
The update is mandatory for all users, according to an email Meta sent to 9to5Google. Meta says the camera will remain disabled until the glasses detect that the light is no longer blocked or damaged.
Tamper detection mechanism
Meta’s second generation of smart glasses already included a safeguard that blocked the camera if the capture LED was covered with tape or other materials. But the company says it has seen people go further, using physical modifications such as drilling out the LED or disabling it through hardware changes.
The new update improves detection of these physical tampering attempts. If the glasses determine the LED has been destroyed or altered, the camera will not function. No photos or videos can be taken while the tampered state persists.
- The camera is disabled if the privacy LED is physically tampered with or destroyed.
- No photos or videos can be taken until the glasses detect the LED is unblocked.
- Meta is also removing ads, posts, and Marketplace listings for services that modify smart glasses to disable the LED, and says legal action is possible against those offering such services.
Growing public pressure
The update arrives amid heightened public backlash over smart glasses and their potential for covert recording. Reports of people using modified glasses to film without the indicator have drawn criticism from privacy advocates and lawmakers.
Meta says it is proud to lead the industry forward with this measure. No other camera product has implemented a similar automatic disable based on LED tampering. The company is also working on additional privacy features for future glasses models, though it did not provide details or a timeline.
