Fusion startups hit $13B in private funding as 17 companies each top $100M

Private fusion investment has surpassed $13 billion, with 17 startups each raising over $100 million. Recent rounds from Helion Energy and Focused Energy highlight accelerating capital, though commercial power generation remains unproven.

Seventeen fusion startups have each raised more than $100 million in private funding, pushing total sector investment past $13 billion, according to a TechCrunch tally published this week. The milestone comes as two major rounds closed in June 2026 alone. Helion Energy raised $465 million, and Focused Energy secured $240 million in a Series A round.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems leads the pack with about $3 billion in total funding. The company's tokamak reactor called SPARC is roughly 75% complete at its Devens, Massachusetts facility. TAE Technologies follows at $1.79 billion in pre-merger funding, Helion Energy at $1.5 billion, and both Pacific Fusion and Shine Technologies at around $1 billion each.

European startups surge as capital diversifies

Germany's Focused Energy combines $400 million in private funding with $200 million in government grants. Proxima Fusion in Munich has raised €185 million, and Marvel Fusion pulled in $162 million. In the UK, Tokamak Energy and First Light Fusion have raised $336 million and $108 million respectively.

  • Helion's latest round valued the company at $15.5 billion, with a power purchase agreement from Microsoft and a target of delivering electricity by 2028.
  • Pacific Fusion's roughly $1 billion is structured in milestone-based tranches, not as a single check.
  • TAE Technologies merged with Trump Media's technology arm, but Trump Media reported less than $2.7 million in revenue during the first nine months of 2025.
  • General Fusion, which has raised $612 million, nearly ran out of cash in 2025 before securing additional capital.
  • The Fusion Industry Association reported that 53 companies raised $2.2 billion in 2025 alone.

Commercial breakeven remains elusive

No private fusion company has demonstrated net energy gain at commercial scale. The U.S. National Ignition Facility achieved scientific breakeven in December 2022, but that measurement did not account for total facility energy consumption, which was roughly 100 times greater. CFS expects SPARC to achieve a burning plasma in late 2026 or early 2027, a significant scientific milestone but far from a commercial power plant. Its planned commercial reactor, ARC, is not expected to deliver electricity until the early 2030s.

The diversity of technical approaches, from tokamaks and field-reversed configurations to laser-driven inertial confinement, means the sector is not placing a single bet. Whether that conviction pays off depends on moving from scientific demonstration to a machine that puts power on the grid at a price utilities will pay. The money is there. The physics, at commercial scale, is not, at least not yet.
