AT&T Expands 400G Wavelength to 40+ Metros as Linux 7.2 and BGP Hijack Claims Reshape Networking

AT&T Business extends 400G wavelength service to over 40 US metros, while Linux 7.2 brings WiFi 8 support. Telegram founder alleges Meta sabotaged access via BGP hijacks in India, and Jio files for its IPO and a LEO satellite network.

AT&T Business expanded its 400Gbps wavelength service to more than a dozen new US metro areas on June 19, 2026, bringing the total to over 40 locations. The carrier is betting on fiber to support AI workloads and enterprise connectivity.

The expansion includes Ashburn, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle, among others. AT&T said its wavelength edgeless handoff now links 440,000 properties serving 2.3 million business tenants, and new 400G connections can be provisioned in as little as 15 days. The carrier has relationships with more than 130 carrier hotels nationwide, using an edgeless design that avoids building traditional network edges at every site.

Linux 7.2 Networking Subsystem Adds WiFi 8 and Driver Updates

On the software side, the Linux 7.2 kernel has merged networking subsystem changes that include early work on WiFi Aware, WiFi 8 (also called UHR), and updates to many wired and wireless drivers. The kernel developers are preparing for next-generation wireless standards while improving performance for existing hardware.

  • WiFi 8 / UHR support is in early stages, with driver framework updates merged for future radios.
  • WiFi Aware enhancements allow devices to discover services without a direct connection.
  • Numerous Ethernet and wireless driver updates for Intel, Broadcom, and other vendors.

BGP Hijacking Allegations Cloud India Connectivity

Telegram founder Pavel Durov accused Meta of using BGP hijacks to disrupt Telegram access in India. Indian telecom operator Jio, which carries Meta's traffic, called the allegations false. BGP hijacking remains a persistent routing security issue that can redirect traffic or cause outages. The accusation comes as India's internet market grows increasingly competitive.

On the same day, Jio Platforms filed draft papers for what could be India's largest ever IPO and announced plans to build a low Earth orbit satellite constellation to rival Starlink. The satellite network would provide broadband access across India and compete with both terrestrial fiber and space-based services.

These four developments illustrate the many layers of network infrastructure evolving simultaneously: physical fiber, operating system kernels, routing security, and orbital networks. As data consumption grows under AI, carriers and technology vendors are racing to supply capacity, software, and secure transport.
