ASML Awards €20,000 Share Bonuses to All Staff as TSMC Advances A14 and Faces EUV Price Hikes
ASML will give all 45,000 employees a €20,000 share award vesting in 2030, joining Samsung and TSMC in AI-era payouts. Meanwhile, TSMC reports strong A14 yield improvements but faces ASML's planned Low-NA EUV price increases that could cost billions.
ASML Holding NV confirmed Friday that it will grant every employee worldwide a one-time €20,000 ($22,862) share award. The bonus, which vests on January 1, 2030, covers all 45,000 staff at Europe's most valuable tech company and ranks among the largest single employee payouts in European tech history.
The payout joins a wave of AI-boom bonuses across the semiconductor industry. Samsung Electronics offered average bonuses of $340,000 to chip division workers. SK Hynix made similar payouts. TSMC committed to boosting profit-sharing by more than 30% on average this year, reflecting the windfall from AI infrastructure spending.
A14 Yields Outpace N2, Drawing AI and Smartphone Customers
TSMC confirmed significant yield and performance improvements in its A14 process technology, which is progressing faster than the N2 node did at this stage of development. Developers of AI and high-performance computing chips, as well as smartphone processors, have expressed strong interest in adopting A14, according to the foundry. The faster ramp gives TSMC an edge in competing for advanced logic orders from customers like Apple, AMD, and Nvidia.
ASML Low-NA EUV Price Hikes Threaten TSMC's Fab Budget
Separately, ASML's planned price increases on its Low-NA EUV lithography machines have reportedly frustrated TSMC. ASML argues that the increased productivity of these tools justifies higher prices. The move could cost TSMC billions of dollars and affect its expansion plans, as the foundry has made a large bet on the existing Low-NA EUV systems for its next-generation fabs.
Key details of the pricing dispute:
- ASML says higher throughput per tool allows customers to produce more wafers, justifying a premium.
- TSMC had already committed to a significant number of Low-NA EUV installations for its 2nm and A14 nodes.
- Analysts estimate that even a 10% price increase on ASML's EUV scanners could add hundreds of millions to TSMC's annual capital expenditure.
- The negotiations come as ASML is nearly sold out of EUV machines through 2028.
Retention and Restructuring Behind the Bonus
The €20,000 share award doubles as a retention tool. ASML is mid-restructuring, cutting management layers while needing to hire and retain the engineers who build the world's most complex chipmaking machines. The 2030 vesting date locks employees in for nearly four years, covering the period of ASML's most aggressive capacity expansion. The company recently raised its 2026 sales forecast to between €43 billion and €45 billion and plans to expand production capacity by 30% for 2027.
What comes next: TSMC and ASML will need to reconcile the price hike dispute as both companies race to meet AI chip demand. TSMC's A14 node is on track for risk production in 2027, while ASML's High-NA EUV machines are expected to begin shipping to customers later this year. The outcome of the price negotiations will shape the cost structure of advanced chipmaking for the rest of the decade.
