Anthropic's Mythos 5 Restored for Select US Groups After White House Negotiations

After a two-week standoff with the White House, Anthropic's Mythos 5 is back online for a curated set of US cyber defenders and infrastructure providers, but the public Fable 5 model remains unavailable with no timeline for release.

The Trump administration has lifted its block on Anthropic's Mythos 5, allowing the company to restore access to the powerful AI model for more than 100 US organizations, according to a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick viewed by The Verge. The decision, dated June 26, ends a two-week deadlock but leaves the public-facing Fable 5 model in limbo.

Under the revised license, the government granted an exception similar to the one made for OpenAI's GPT-5.6 earlier this week. Approved groups include cybersecurity firms and critical infrastructure providers, and the exception applies to foreign nationals working at those organizations as well as non-U.S. citizen Anthropic employees.

Negotiation timeline and license terms

The standoff began when the Trump administration imposed an export control directive that barred any foreign national from accessing Mythos 5 or Fable 5, including Anthropic's own staff. The company halted access on June 12. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown led negotiations with Lutnick, resulting in Friday's letter.

  • Lutnick's letter states Anthropic has "worked with the U.S. government to address risks" associated with both models.
  • Anthropic committed to collaborate on future protocols and standards for Mythos-class models.
  • The government did not lift the overarching export control directive; it made a specific exception for Mythos 5.
  • Approved organizations include "cyber defenders and infrastructure providers," per Anthropic spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri.
  • No timeline has been provided for Fable 5's reinstatement.

Competitive pressure and regulatory fragmentation

The decision follows increasing pressure on the administration to rationalize its case-by-case approach. Anthropic competitors offered public criticism of the selective release, arguing it creates an uneven playing field. According to Semafor, talks about Fable 5 remain ongoing but with no apparent timeline for an agreement.

Ghiglieri said Anthropic is "working to provision the approved set of providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible." The company stated it is pleased with the progress and will continue working with the government to expand access and eventually release Fable 5 for general use.

What comes next remains uncertain. The administration has not indicated whether it will adopt a broader framework for advanced AI release, and Anthropic faces the prospect of prolonged negotiations for Fable 5 while its rivals operate under different regulatory terms.
