Anthropic Reverses Course, Keeps Claude Fable 5 in Subscription Plans With Reduced Limits
Anthropic will keep Claude Fable 5 in Max and Team Premium plans from July 20, but at 50% of reduced limits. Pro users get a $100 credit then pay API rates. The reversal follows competitive pressure from OpenAI's cheaper GPT-5.6 Sol.
Anthropic will include Claude Fable 5 in its Max and Team Premium subscription plans starting July 20, but at just 50 percent of already reduced usage limits, the company announced on X. The move reverses an earlier plan to remove the model from subscriptions entirely.
Regular usage limits across all plans drop by one third on the same day, meaning Max and Team Premium subscribers effectively get one sixth of their original Fable 5 allocation. Pro and Team Standard users lose subscription access entirely and receive a one-time $100 usage credit, after which they must pay API rates.
Competitive pressure from cheaper rivals drove the reversal
Anthropic originally planned to pull Fable 5 from all subscription tiers and make it available only through API pricing. The company cited demand that has been hard to manage and frustrating for users. But the competitive landscape shifted. OpenAI released GPT-5.6 Sol, a model with similar performance at roughly one third the cost. Chinese labs like Kimi also exert massive pricing pressure on everything below the frontier tier.
- Max and Team Premium subscribers get Fable 5 at 50 percent of their reduced limits starting July 20.
- Pro and Team Standard users lose subscription access and receive a one-time $100 credit.
- Regular usage limits across all plans drop by 33 percent on July 20.
- After the $100 credit is exhausted, Pro users must pay API rates for Fable 5 access.
- Anthropic says it continues to invest in more capacity to meet demand.
What the pricing shift means for subscribers
The $100 credit for Pro users is unlikely to cover extensive Fable 5 usage. At API rates, heavy users could burn through that amount quickly, making the subscription effectively a gateway to paid consumption. For Max and Team Premium subscribers paying $100 or $200 per month, the reduced limits may erode the value proposition of those tiers.
Simon Willison noted that the competition from GPT-5.6 Sol made Anthropic's original plan untenable. The company now faces a delicate balance: keeping subscribers happy while managing infrastructure costs and staying competitive on price. Whether the reduced limits will satisfy users or drive them to rival models remains to be seen.
