Amazon MGM Studios has decided not to release 'Artificial,' Luca Guadagnino's upcoming biopic about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to multiple reports. The nearly finished film, starring Andrew Garfield as Altman, is now being shopped to other studios.

The decision comes months after Amazon announced a $50 billion strategic partnership with OpenAI in April 2026, under which Amazon committed an initial $15 billion investment with a potential additional $35 billion contingent on certain conditions. AWS also became the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier.

Film's Dark Tone and Unflattering Portrayals

'Artificial' is described as a comedic drama centered on the chaotic five-day period in November 2023 when Altman was suddenly fired by OpenAI's board, only to be reinstated four days later. The cast includes Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

According to sources cited by Puck and Variety, the film's tone ended up significantly darker than Guadagnino's original pitch. The portrayals of Altman and Musk are reportedly unsympathetic, with the characters described as those audiences would 'like the least.'
