Zabbix

Zabbix is a mature, enterprise-grade open-source monitoring platform for tracking the health and performance of servers, network devices, virtual machines, cloud services, databases, and web applications. It is widely used by hosting providers and data centers to monitor their entire infrastructure from a single platform.

The platform supports multiple data collection methods: Zabbix agents (installed on monitored hosts), SNMP polling, IPMI, JMX, HTTP checks, and agentless monitoring. This flexibility means it can monitor Linux servers, Windows machines, network switches, storage arrays, and cloud APIs all from one Zabbix installation.

Zabbix provides powerful alerting with escalation rules, maintenance windows, and flexible notification channels (email, SMS, Slack, PagerDuty, custom scripts). Trigger expressions allow complex conditions like "alert if CPU exceeds 90% for more than 5 minutes on a production server." Problem correlation and root cause analysis help operators quickly identify the source of issues.

The web frontend provides real-time dashboards, historical graphs, network topology maps, SLA reports, and capacity planning data. Templates for common monitoring scenarios (Linux servers, MySQL, Apache, Nginx, Docker) are available out of the box and from the community.

For hosting providers, Zabbix typically serves as the central monitoring system that feeds into their operations workflow. When a server or service goes down, Zabbix detects it, alerts the operations team, and logs the incident for SLA reporting. Auto-discovery features help manage growing infrastructure without manual configuration of each new server.
