About WordPress

WordPress started as a blogging platform in 2003 and grew into the most widely used content management system on the internet. The core software, maintained by the WordPress Foundation, is free and licensed under GPLv2. You install it on your own server or use a managed host. The block editor (Gutenberg) lets you build pages and posts by dragging and dropping blocks for text, images, galleries, forms, and more. Custom post types, taxonomies, and a REST API give developers deep control. The plugin directory contains over 60,000 extensions for ecommerce (WooCommerce), SEO, security, caching, and membership sites. Thousands of themes, both free and premium, change the look and feel. WordPress supports multisite networks, user roles and permissions, media management, and scheduled publishing. It runs on PHP and MySQL or MariaDB, and works with any modern web server. Beginners use the visual editor and theme customizer; developers write custom code, hooks, and filters. Notable fact: as of 2025, WordPress powers about 43 percent of all websites, according to W3Techs.
