About Webmin
Webmin is a free, open-source web-based system administration tool for Unix and Linux servers. It provides a graphical interface for managing virtually every aspect of a Linux server through a web browser, eliminating the need to manually edit configuration files or remember complex command-line syntax for routine administration tasks.
The tool covers an extensive range of system administration functions: user and group management, disk quotas, file system management, package installation and updates, cron job scheduling, firewall configuration (iptables/firewalld), service management, log file viewing, and system information dashboards. Each function is handled by a dedicated Webmin module.
For server software commonly used in hosting, Webmin includes modules for Apache, Nginx, BIND DNS, Postfix, Dovecot, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, ProFTPD, Fail2Ban, and dozens more. Each module provides a full configuration interface for that particular service, often exposing every configuration option available.
Webmin is frequently paired with Virtualmin, a hosting control panel module that adds domain hosting features like virtual host management, email account creation, database management, and SSL certificate handling. Together, Webmin and Virtualmin provide a free alternative to commercial control panels like cPanel and Plesk, though with a steeper learning curve and less polish.
For hosting providers, Webmin serves a different niche than cPanel or Plesk. It is ideal for server administrators who need a quick GUI for system tasks but don't need the full customer-facing hosting panel experience. Many admins use Webmin for backend server management even when cPanel or Plesk handles the customer-facing hosting interface.
The Usermin companion application provides a simplified, limited web interface for end users (email, file manager, password changes) without exposing full server administration capabilities.
