Vagrant

Vagrant is a command-line tool for building and managing virtual machine environments. Instead of manually setting up a development stack on your laptop or a remote server, you define the environment in a single Vagrantfile: the operating system, installed packages, networking, shared folders, provisioning scripts. One command (vagrant up) spins up the whole thing, typically using VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V, or Docker as the backend. HashiCorp originally created Vagrant in 2010, and it remains open source under the BSL license (Business Source License 1.1, which converts to MPL 2.0 after four years). It works on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The provisioning system is pluggable: shell scripts, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Salt, or Dockerfile. You can also use boxes (pre-built base images) from the public Vagrant Cloud or build your own. The real value is consistency. Everyone on the team runs identical environments, so 'works on my machine' stops being an excuse. It also tears everything down cleanly with vagrant destroy, saving disk space. There is a plugin ecosystem (over 600 gems available) for things like AWS or Azure providers, triggered commands, or host manager updates. The project is still actively maintained by HashiCorp, though the company has shifted some focus to its cloud products. Vagrant remains a low-friction entry point for developers who want to test infrastructure code or build isolated staging VMs without managing a full orchestration platform.
