About StartOS

StartOS is a Linux-based operating system designed to turn a dedicated computer or single-board device into a personal server. It provides a web-based dashboard for installing, managing, and updating self-hosted applications like Bitwarden, Nextcloud, Matrix, and Bitcoin nodes. The system is built around a service-oriented architecture where each app runs in its own isolated container.

StartOS uses a custom package format called S9PKG and a service manager that handles dependencies between apps. It supports x86_64 and ARM64 hardware, including the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5. The dashboard includes a marketplace for one-click app installation, automatic backups, remote access via Tor, and multi-user account management. All communication between the user and the server is encrypted by default.

The project is developed by Start9 Labs and is open source under a mix of AGPL and other permissive licenses. It is free to use on your own hardware, with optional commercial support available. StartOS is ideal for anyone who wants to reclaim control of their data and run internet services without relying on big tech clouds.
