SpamExperts

SpamExperts (now part of N-able Mail Assure) is an email filtering and security platform built specifically for web hosting providers and managed service providers. It provides inbound and outbound email filtering that catches spam, malware, phishing attempts, and other email-borne threats before they reach customer mailboxes or leave the server.

Inbound filtering works by routing incoming email through SpamExperts' filtering cluster before it reaches the hosting server. The system uses multiple detection layers: reputation checks, content analysis, Bayesian filtering, heuristic scanning, attachment scanning, and machine learning classification. The combination achieves spam detection rates above 99.9% with very low false positive rates. Legitimate emails that are accidentally flagged can be released from the quarantine by end users through a web interface.

Outbound filtering monitors email leaving the hosting server to prevent compromised accounts from sending spam. This is critical for hosting providers because if a customer account gets hacked and sends spam, the server's IP addresses end up on blacklists, affecting email delivery for every customer on that server. SpamExperts' outbound filtering catches outgoing spam before it damages the server's reputation.

The platform integrates with cPanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin through plugins that allow hosting providers to provision and manage email filtering directly from the control panel. WHMCS integration enables automated billing for email filtering as an add-on product. Customers can access their own spam quarantine and filtering settings through a branded web interface.

For hosting providers, email is one of the most support-intensive services. Spam complaints, delivery issues, and blacklisting problems generate a disproportionate number of support tickets. SpamExperts significantly reduces this burden by handling the filtering infrastructure and providing tools for customers to self-manage their email filtering preferences.

The per-domain pricing model makes it easy to offer as a hosting add-on. Many providers include inbound filtering free with hosting plans and charge for outbound filtering as a premium feature.
