About Sandstorm

Sandstorm is an open source platform for running self-hosted web applications securely and easily. Instead of installing and maintaining individual apps on separate servers, you run them all on one Sandstorm instance. Each app runs inside its own secure container with automatic per-app user accounts and granular sharing controls.

The platform includes a built-in app market where you can install tools like EtherCalc, GitLab, Rocket.Chat, and Wekan with one click. It features a powerful file access system, a command-line tool called sandstorm for management, and supports automatic HTTPS via Let's Encrypt. Sandstorm is written in C++ with a focus on capability-based security. It runs on Linux and supports Docker-based apps as well as native packages.

Sandstorm is ideal for small teams, developers, and privacy-conscious users who want control over their data without sysadmin overhead. It is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. The project was originally funded through a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 and continues to be maintained by a community of contributors.
