Safebucket

Safebucket is a backup utility designed to work with any S3-compatible object store. It handles file-level backups by chunking data, running client-side deduplication, compressing each chunk, and encrypting everything before upload. This means only unique blocks are stored, saving space and bandwidth. The tool is built in Go and distributed as a single binary with no runtime dependencies.

Backups are stored in a custom format inside a single S3 bucket. You choose the encryption key, and Safebucket uses AES-256-GCM. It supports both full and incremental backups, with automatic pruning of old snapshots. The tool includes a restore command that reconstructs files from the chunk store, and it can verify backup integrity. It runs on Linux and macOS, and can backup to AWS S3, MinIO, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2, and any other S3-compatible endpoint.

Safebucket is released under the MIT license, free for anyone to use or modify. The project is maintained by a small independent team and is not backed by a large company. It is best suited for developers or system administrators comfortable with command-line tools and S3 storage. The project is still relatively new, so expect active development and occasional breaking changes.
