QEMU

QEMU can run unmodified guest operating systems inside a host by using dynamic binary translation. It supports two primary modes: full system emulation, where it emulates a complete machine including peripherals, and user mode emulation, where it runs a single Linux process compiled for a different CPU architecture. When used with KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) on Linux, QEMU can achieve near-native performance for x86 guests. The project supports a wide range of hardware targets including x86, ARM, RISC-V, PowerPC, and MIPS. QEMU is the backend for many popular virtualization tools like VirtualBox, libvirt, and Vagrant. It also powers Android emulators and various embedded development workflows. The software includes a built-in GDB stub for debugging guest kernels and supports features like snapshots, live migration, and paravirtualized block and network devices through the Virtio specification. QEMU was originally created by Fabrice Bellard and is maintained by a community of contributors under the umbrella of the QEMU project. It is licensed under GPL version 2, with some optional components under BSD or other open source licenses.
