PowerDNS

PowerDNS is an open-source DNS server suite widely used by hosting providers, ISPs, and enterprises for authoritative DNS hosting and DNS recursion. The project consists of two main components: the Authoritative Server and the Recursor, which can be deployed independently or together.

The Authoritative Server supports multiple database backends including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and LDAP, making it easy to integrate with existing hosting platforms. Zone data is stored in the database rather than flat files, which enables dynamic updates, web-based management interfaces, and integration with billing and provisioning systems.

The Recursor is a high-performance resolving DNS server that handles DNS lookups for networks. It supports DNSSEC validation, RPZ (Response Policy Zones) for DNS-based content filtering, and Lua scripting for custom query processing logic.
