Portainer

Portainer is a lightweight management UI for Docker and Kubernetes that simplifies container operations through a web interface. It provides a visual way to manage containers, images, networks, volumes, and stacks without requiring command-line expertise.

For hosting providers running containerized infrastructure, Portainer provides an accessible management layer. It supports Docker standalone, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes environments from a single dashboard. Administrators can deploy containers, monitor resource usage, view logs, access container consoles, and manage networking through the browser.

The stack management feature allows deploying multi-container applications using Docker Compose files through the web UI. Templates provide one-click deployment of common applications: WordPress, MySQL, Redis, Nginx, and many others. Custom templates can be created for frequently deployed application stacks.

Portainer includes role-based access control (RBAC), allowing hosting providers to give customers limited access to manage their own containers without exposing the full Docker infrastructure. This enables a container-hosting model where customers deploy and manage their applications through Portainer while the provider maintains the underlying infrastructure.

The Community Edition (CE) is free and covers most use cases. The Business Edition adds features like RBAC, registry management, and GitOps integration. Portainer deploys as a single Docker container and connects to the Docker socket or Kubernetes API to manage the environment.

For hosting operations, Portainer reduces the barrier to Docker management for team members who may not be comfortable with the Docker CLI. It also provides a visual overview of resource usage, running containers, and system health that is quicker to scan than command-line output.
