About Podman
Podman lets you run containers and pods without a central daemon. That means you can spin up containers under your own user namespace, no root required for most operations. It follows the same OCI standards as Docker, so you can alias docker to podman and keep using your existing workflows. The tool supports pod concepts borrowed from Kubernetes, letting you group containers that share network and storage resources. You can generate Kubernetes YAML directly from a running pod, which makes moving from local dev to a cluster a lot smoother. Podman also integrates with systemd, so you can generate unit files to keep containers running across reboots. It works on most Linux distributions and runs on macOS and Windows through a virtual machine backend. The project is part of the Containers organization under Red Hat, and it is fully open source under the Apache 2.0 license. If you want a container engine that avoids daemon overhead and plays nice with existing Docker tooling, Podman is worth a look.
