About PieFed

PieFed is a federated alternative to traditional link aggregation sites like Reddit. It lets you create communities, post links and text, and vote on content, all while keeping your data on servers you control. Unlike centralized platforms, PieFed connects to the wider fediverse using the ActivityPub protocol, so you can interact with users on Mastodon, Lemmy, and other compatible services.

Built with Python and the Flask web framework, PieFed emphasizes performance and simplicity. It supports Markdown formatting, image uploads, customizable community rules, and moderation tools including user bans and post reports. The platform integrates with the fediverse via ActivityPub, allowing cross-posting and follows from outside instances. It runs on Linux servers with PostgreSQL as the database backend.

PieFed is open source software, licensed under the AGPLv3. It is suited for anyone who wants to run a community without centralized control, from small interest groups to larger instances. Development is led by a community of contributors and hosted on GitHub.
