phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin is the most widely deployed web-based database administration tool in the world. It provides a graphical interface for managing MySQL and MariaDB databases through a web browser, and it is bundled with virtually every web hosting control panel including cPanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin.

The tool allows users to browse and search databases, create and modify tables, execute SQL queries, manage users and permissions, import and export data in multiple formats (SQL, CSV, XML, JSON, etc.), and perform maintenance operations. For hosting customers who are not comfortable with command-line MySQL, phpMyAdmin is their primary way to interact with databases.

phpMyAdmin supports a comprehensive set of MySQL features: table relationships and foreign keys, views, stored procedures, triggers, events, and advanced search with regular expressions. The visual query builder helps users who are not fluent in SQL construct queries through a point-and-click interface.

For hosting providers, phpMyAdmin is essentially required because customers expect it. It is pre-installed and pre-configured with cPanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin, with single sign-on so customers access it directly from their control panel without entering separate database credentials.

Security considerations are important since phpMyAdmin is a frequent target for automated attacks. Hosting providers typically restrict access to authenticated control panel users, run it on non-standard paths, and keep it updated to the latest version. The configuration allows IP whitelisting, two-factor authentication, and captcha integration.
