About phpBB
phpBB is a free and open-source forum software that lets you create online communities with threaded discussion. It has been around since 2000 and powers millions of forums worldwide. You can set up categories, subforums, user groups, private messaging, and advanced permission systems out of the box.
It runs on PHP with support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and Oracle databases. The software includes a template system for customizing layouts, an extension system for adding features, and supports multiple languages. It integrates with popular CMS platforms like WordPress and Joomla through bridges. The admin control panel gives you fine-grained control over user roles and moderation tools.
The project is maintained by the phpBB Group under the GNU General Public License v2. It is completely free to use and distribute. You need a web server with PHP and a database to run it. phpBB is a solid choice for hobbyists, small communities, and organizations that want full control over their forum software without licensing fees.
