OpenSearch
OpenSearch is a community-driven, Apache 2.0-licensed search and analytics suite derived from Elasticsearch 7.10.2.
About OpenSearch
OpenSearch was forked from Elasticsearch and Kibana by Amazon Web Services in 2021 after Elastic changed its license to a proprietary model. The project aims to keep the software truly open source with a permissive license that doesn't restrict how you run, modify, or redistribute it. You get a distributed search engine with full-text queries, aggregations, and vector search capabilities, plus a visualization layer (OpenSearch Dashboards) for building dashboards and exploring logs. It supports standard REST APIs compatible with Elasticsearch 7.x, making migration relatively painless if you're coming from that era. OpenSearch runs on any Java-capable Linux system and can scale out across clusters with sharding and replication. It includes built-in security features like role-based access control, audit logging, and encryption in transit. The project now has contributions from hundreds of developers outside Amazon and is managed by the OpenSearch Software Foundation under the Linux Foundation. If you need a production-grade search backend without worrying about license changes or vendor lock-in, OpenSearch is a solid choice.
