Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine. It allows developers to run JavaScript on the server side, enabling full-stack JavaScript development. In the hosting world, Node.js has become essential both as an application runtime and as the foundation for frontend build tools.

For application hosting, Node.js powers a significant number of web applications, APIs, and microservices. Frameworks like Express, Fastify, NestJS, and Next.js are built on Node.js and are deployed on hosting servers ranging from shared hosting to Kubernetes clusters. The event-driven, non-blocking I/O model handles concurrent connections efficiently, making Node.js applications performant for real-time and high-traffic use cases.

Beyond application hosting, Node.js is required as a build tool dependency for most modern web development. Frontend frameworks like React, Vue, and Angular require Node.js and npm for building production assets. Even PHP developers using Laravel need Node.js for compiling frontend assets with Vite or Mix. npm (Node Package Manager), included with Node.js, is the world's largest software registry with over two million packages. It handles dependency management similar to Composer for PHP. The ecosystem provides packages for virtually every need: web frameworks, database drivers, authentication, image processing, email sending, and thousands more.

For hosting providers, Node.js support is increasingly expected by customers. Even if the primary hosting market is PHP-based, developers need Node.js available for asset compilation, CLI tools, and modern development workflows.
