Nagios Core
Nagios Core is an open-source monitoring system that watches hosts, services, and network infrastructure, alerting you when things go wrong.
About Nagios Core
Nagios Core has been a foundational tool in the infrastructure monitoring space since 1999. It periodically checks the status of hosts and services defined in its configuration, sending notifications via email or SMS when something breaks or recovers. The core engine itself is minimal and relies on plugins (hundreds available from the Nagios Exchange) to actually perform checks. You write configuration files (or use a GUI like Nagios XI, which is the commercial layer on top) to define what to monitor. It runs on Linux/Unix systems and uses a simple but powerful plugin API. Nagios Core also supports passive checks, where remote machines send results back to the server. Its alerting logic includes escalation paths and notification schedules. The web interface is basic but functional, showing status maps and reports. Because it's purely open source, you can customize every part of it, but that also means you'll spend more time on manual config and tuning than with newer tools. It's best for teams that need a proven, no-nonsense monitoring foundation on a tight budget.
