Nagios Core has been a foundational tool in the infrastructure monitoring space since 1999. It periodically checks the status of hosts and services defined in its configuration, sending notifications via email or SMS when something breaks or recovers. The core engine itself is minimal and relies on plugins (hundreds available from the Nagios Exchange) to actually perform checks.
