MongoDB was created by Dwight Merriman and Eliot Horowitz in 2007 and is now developed by MongoDB Inc. It is one of the most widely used NoSQL databases in production. Instead of using tables and schemas, MongoDB stores data as BSON documents which can contain nested arrays and subdocuments. This makes it a natural fit for applications that need to handle rapidly changing data structures or large volumes of unstructured data. You can run queries using a rich aggregation pipeline, create indexes on any field, and replicate data across multiple servers for high availability. MongoDB supports horizontal scaling through sharding, which distributes data across clusters. The database runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and there are official drivers for most programming languages including Python, JavaScript, Java, Go, and Rust. The company also offers Atlas, a fully managed cloud service that handles backups, monitoring, and auto-scaling. For self-hosted setups, the Community Edition is free, while the Enterprise edition adds advanced security features and in-memory storage engine support.
