You install it on a Linux server and it handles user authentication, mailbox quotas, alias management, and even greylisting. The admin interface is clean and lets you control multiple domains from one place, which makes it a solid pick for small hosting companies or anyone who wants self-hosted email without the pain. Modoboa is written in Python and uses SQLite or MariaDB/MySQL for storage. The project started around 2012 and has an active community.
