About Jenkins
Jenkins is the old reliable workhorse of CI/CD. It started life as the Hudson project back in 2004 and was forked to Jenkins in 2011 after Oracle got involved. Today it runs on anything with a Java Runtime Environment, which means Linux, Windows, and macOS servers are all fair game. You install it as a servlet in a servlet container like Tomcat, or you can run it standalone with its built-in Jetty server. The real power of Jenkins is its plugin ecosystem. There are over 1,800 plugins in the Update Center. You can hook it into Git, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, GCP, you name it. It supports freestyle jobs, pipelines as code with Jenkinsfile (Groovy-based DSL), and multibranch pipelines that automatically discover branches and pull requests. The Blue Ocean interface was a nice attempt at modernizing the UI, but most long-time users stick with the classic view. Jenkins is maintained by the Jenkins project under the Continuous Delivery Foundation, a Linux Foundation project. It is free software distributed under the MIT License. If you need enterprise support, CloudBees offers a commercial distribution called CloudBees CI.
